Algarve Portugal Road Trip Budget

Road tripping through Algarve Portugal is a great way to see this magnificent region of the world. And packing a rental car full of friends and splitting the price is a great way to do a road trip through southern Portugal on a budget. That’s what I did when I traveled through the Algarve region!

Driving through Algarve Portugal, my friends and I stopped in Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão, and Lagos. On the trip, we hiked the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, we took a kayak tour through the famous Benagil Caves, and we ate pastéis de nata. In this post, I provide a breakdown of the budget for my five-day road trip through Algarve Portugal. Keep in mind that I traveled with four other people, so that helped keep our per-person rental car, gas, and lodging costs a bit lower. We rented a five-seat vehicle, and we filled all five seats.

Budget: Algarve Portugal Five-Day Road Trip

Budget breakdown per person:

  • Split between five people, our rental car cost $39.60 total per person. Also split between five people, gas cost us $33.75 per person. This included the cost of refilling the tank at the end of the trip before returning the car. Additionally, we had one final transportation cost: an Uber from the end of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail hike to take us back to our car in the parking lot. Split five ways, this added another $4.00 each.

  • Our hotel in Albufeira cost $19.60 per person (total for two nights). Our lodging in Portimão cost $26.40 per person (total for two nights).

  • The only excursion we paid for was the kayak tour of the Algarve Benagil Caves, which cost $35.54 per person.

  • All together, my food and drinks for the entire trip, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and bottled water (I bought drinking water) cost $108.52, which came out to $21.70 per day.

Total spent per person → $267.41
