English Lesson Plans for Primary School Students

As an auxiliar de conversación (an assistant language teacher in Spain), I teach English to the first, second, and third grades in an elementary school. Since the school I work at is a bilingual school, I teach English through other academic and extracurricular subjects, including natural and social sciences, physical education, and music. On this page, I’ve compiled the English as a second language (ESL) lesson plans I’ve used with my students on a variety of subjects.

You’ll find these ESL lesson plans organized below by subject in alphabetical order.

Andalusia, Spain

Andalusia Day - I made this presentation to teach the English portion of a lesson on Andalusia Day (Día de Andalucía), which is celebrated annually on February 28. This English lesson plan is intended for use with first grade primary school students, but it could probably be used in a shortened format with slightly older students, too.

Animals

Living Things: Animal Classification - This lesson plan can be used to teach students how to classify animals in English. Students can learn to differentiate between invertebrates and vertebrates; fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals; and herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. I made this English PowerPoint presentation for second grade elementary schoolers.

The Animal Kingdom - Teachers can use this presentation for English lessons on the animal kingdom. The lesson plan focuses on animal classification. It covers invertebrates vs. vertebrates, fish vs. amphibians vs. reptiles vs. birds vs. mammals, carnivores vs. herbivores vs. omnivores, and oviparous vs. viviparous animals. The presentation is meant for a third grade English social studies class in a bilingual school.

Plants and Animals - I made this ESL presentation to teach first grade students in a Spanish primary school about plants and animals (but mostly animals).

Body Parts - External

The Body - Use this presentation to teach about external body parts. I created this for my second grade natural sciences class, but it could probably be useful for third grade English language learners, too.

Body Parts - Internal

The Body - I made this lesson plan to teach English vocabulary for human anatomy and internal body systems to third grade elementary school students.

Christmas

Merry Christmas! - This presentation is meant to teach students about how Christmas is celebrated in the United States. Of course, there are a wide variety of winter holidays celebrated in the USA, but since I celebrate Christmas, that’s what I decided to teach my students about in Spain. Enjoy!

Cities and Villages

Cities and Villages (Second Grade) - Use this presentation to teach about the differences between cities and villages in English. I made this English lesson plan for a second grade social studies / social sciences class.

Cities and Villages (Third Grade) - This presentation can be used to teach English language learners about cities and villages, including their differences and the types of buildings that can be found in most municipalities. I made this English lesson plan for third graders in a bilingual Spanish elementary school.

Food and Nutrition

Food and Nutrition - This presentation on food and nutrition is intended for second and third grade elementary school English language learners. It includes healthy vs. unhealthy foods, as well as the difference between carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vitamins and minerals.

Health and Hygiene

How to Stay Healthy (Second Grade) - This presentation teaches about how to stay healthy and maintain good personal hygiene. It also asks students to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy foods. This English lesson plan is meant for second grade students in primary school.

Hygiene (Third Grade) - Use this English lesson plan to teach about hygiene and healthy habits. This presentation is intended for third graders learning English in elementary school.

Introducing Yourself

Introduction Presentation Template - Use this presentation to introduce yourself to your students. Make it interactive by asking your students about themselves after you tell them about yourself!

Living Things

Living Things: Plants and Animals - This English lesson plan teaches students about living things and how to classify them. It focuses mostly on animals, but it also covers the parts of a plant. I created this powerpoint presentation for a first grade natural sciences class.

Matter, Materials, and Energy

Matter, Materials, and Energy - This lesson plan aims to teach students basic English natural sciences concepts related to matter, materials, and energy. The presentation and English teaching resources within it are intended for third grade primary school students.

Making and Selling - You can use this lesson plan to teach students about raw materials, where they come from (their origins), how we obtain them, and how we turn them into manufactured products.

Nature & Environments: Land and Water

Nature and Environments - Use this English lesson plan to teach about nature, environments, and habitats to young primary school students. This presentation also includes a lesson on the difference between wild and domesticated animals.

Natural Landscapes (First Grade) - Here’s an English lesson plan for teaching about natural landscapes to first grade primary school students. These ESL natural sciences resources focus on types of landscapes and their features.

Natural Landscapes (Third Grade) - Here’s another version of an English lesson plan on natural landscapes. This one is for third grade primary school students. In addition to the concepts covered in the one above, this one also covers coastal landforms like capes, peninsulas, islands, and archipelagos.

Plants

Plants: Types, Parts, Reproduction, and Nutrition - I made this English lesson plan to teach about the plant kingdom to third grade primary school students in a bilingual natural science class in Spain.

Professions/Occupations

Professions - Use this English as a second language (ESL)—or English as a foreign language (EFL)—presentation to teach students about different jobs and where people work.

Senses

The Senses - I made this presentation to teach third grade primary school students about the five senses in English. This presentation covers the functions and anatomy of the five senses.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day - Use this presentation to teach young elementary school age students about Valentine’s Day, a great holiday for mixing English language learning with a little extra fun!

Weather and Climate

Weather and Climate: Air and Water - This lesson plan includes resources for teaching about weather, climate, air, and water in English to primary school students.

Well, that’s all for now! But as I continue creating English lesson plans and other resources, I’ll update this page. So stay tuned! Happy teaching!
