Teaching Good Personal Hygiene to Primary Students in English (ESL/EFL)

As an auxiliar de conversación, I’ve taught primary school students English during subject classes such as natural and social sciences. One of the first topics we covered in the second and third grades was good personal hygiene. This topic includes maintaining healthy habits to prevent illness and stay in good health.

This blog post includes the resources I used to teach good personal hygiene in English to second and third grade primary school students in Spain. Lots of these resources could be used for elementary school students in other grades, too.

Table of Contents:

  • English Songs

  • English Videos

  • English Games and Activities

  • Complete English Lesson Plans

English Songs:

Wash Your Hands Song - An excellent English song made to teach children how to wash their hands well. I like this song in particular, because students can do the movements of washing their hands while they sing.

Fruit Song for Kids - An English song for primary school students that lists different fruits and encourages kids to eat healthy food.

Fruits Are Great - Another fun song to get kids excited about eating fruit.

Fruit and Veggies ABC’s - A great video for teaching fruits and vegetables as well as the English alphabet to primary school students.

English Videos

The Very Hungry Caterpillar - A seven-minute reading and animation of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. BONUS ACTIVITY: Pause the video whenever the caterpillar eats something and ask the students if the food is healthy or unhealthy.

English Games and Activities:

Name a Healthy Food - Ask the students to name as many healthy foods as they can, and write the foods on the board. You can tell them they will compete against the other classes to think of the most healthy foods. Later you can tell them which class won the game.

Hangman - Play hangman with healthy or unhealthy foods. Tell the students that their only hint is whether or not the food is healthy.

See the complete lesson plans above for more game ideas.
