Travel Highlights From My Trip to Berlin

Oberbaumbrücke Berlin Germany

Berlin is an exciting German city with lots of things to do and see.

And for history enthusiasts, like me, Berlin is a must-see travel destination in Europe. Berlin’s complicated history is physically preserved in the architecture of the city itself, from its buildings to its monuments.

Here, I share about my favorite things I saw and did while visiting Berlin.

In early April of 2023, when I had the opportunity to travel to Berlin, the city was mostly cold and gray. But luckily, the weather wasn’t bad enough to prevent me from enjoying some time outside—albeit completely bundled up.

During my trip to Berlin, I explored lots of the city, but the city is much larger than I had anticipated. As a result, there are plenty of neighborhoods and areas of Berlin that I didn’t get a chance to see. But oh well, I’ll just have to return one day!

In any case, I made sure to see the main tourist attractions, historical sites, and monuments that I had wanted to visit.

I loved my trip to Berlin, and I hope you enjoy reading about the highlights from my travels.

Walking Along the East Side Gallery

One of my favorite things I saw in Berlin was the East Side Gallery, a memorial of the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, now covered with murals by over one hundred artists.

I spent the first part of my first day in Berlin strolling along the East Side Gallery, studying the art and reflecting on the messages conveyed by the artists.

Eating in Friedrichshain

When I visited Berlin, I stayed in Friedrichshain, a trendy area with an incredible food scene.

Now, to be fair, Berlin just simply has fantastic food in general. But some of my favorite restaurants I ate at were in Friedrichshain, specifically in the area around a park called Boxhagener Platz.

My favorites in the area included li.ke : serious||thai||vegan and Fatoush, a Syrian restaurant.

Sightseeing in Mitte

I couldn’t leave Berlin without doing some sightseeing in Mitte, Berlin’s central area that contains lots of historical monuments and other important sights.

In Mitte, I saw Alexanderplatz, I explored Museum Island, and I gazed up at the Brandenburg Gate.

Biking Around Neukölln

My favorite experience of my trip to Berlin was biking in Neukölln. Luckily, Berlin had a sunny day that day, so the weather was perfect for a bike ride.

My friend and I rented bikes for the day at a local bicycle shop, and we spent the day biking around the area. She lives in Berlin, so she led me and showed me around.

First we biked all around Tempelhofer Feld, an old airport converted into a massive park. Later, we made our way to Treptower Park, a gorgeous park along the river. Treptower Park also includes a Soviet memorial, which we visited.

At the end of our ride, we grabbed beers and pretzels at Zenner Biergarten und Weingarten and relaxed with views of the river.
