Weather and Climate: Primary School English Teaching Resources

Wondering how to teach about weather and climate in English? Looking for English teaching resources to explain basic weather concepts, as well as the water cycle and the Earth’s structure, to primary school English language learners? I’ve compiled my favorite games, activities, songs, and videos on that very topic.

Below you will find the complete English lesson plan I created to teach about weather and climate, water and air, to third grade primary school students in Spain. These resources include lessons and activities related to types of weather (cloudy, sunny, rainy, snowy), the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection), and the Earth’s layers (crust, mantle, core).

Feel free to use the English teaching resources below however they will work best for you and your primary school ESL/ESOL/ELL students.

English Games & Activities:

Weather Vocabulary Quiz - An interactive activity for practicing word recognition for English weather vocabulary.

What’s the Weather Like? - A spin-the-wheel-style game that can be used to get students to review, recall, and speak aloud English weather vocabulary.

English Songs:

Water Cycle Hip Hop Dance - In my experience, one of the best ways to get students to engage with the material they’re learning is to stand up and move. Here’s an excellent example: a hip hop dance that teaches the phases of the water cycle in English.

Four Layers of the Earth - This fairly simple song is great for getting students to speak—or rather sing—aloud the English vocabulary words related to the Earth’s structure.

Learn the Seasons - This fun music video teaches about the seasons and weather in English through a parody of Bruno Mars’s Uptown Funk.

How’s the Weather? - If you’re looking for an easy song to review basic English weather vocabulary, you might like this one.

The Weather Song - Here’s one more super simple song about English weather concepts!

I hope your primary school students find these resources helpful for learning and practicing English weather and climate vocabulary. Enjoy!
