Detroit, Michigan Two-Day Travel Itinerary

Read about my travel itinerary for my two-day trip to Detroit, Michigan. My hope is that reading about the things I did will help you play your visit to Detroit.

When I visited Detroit, I had the benefit of visiting a friend who lived there. My friend planned the trip, based on her experiences in the city for about three years. Since my friend knows the city well, she decided where we ought to go and what we ought to do. And she did an excellent job—which is why I’m sharing our itinerary with you!

Please enjoy our two-day travel itinerary for Detroit, Michigan below!

Day 1:

Morning

During my first morning in Detroit, we went to Public House for brunch. The restaurant is located in Ferndale, so it’s a short drive from the city of Detroit.

In addition to a wide array of traditional brunch options that include meat and dairy, Public House has an epic vegan menu. So it’s great for vegetarians and omnivores alike. They also offer alcoholic brunch drinks, if you’re into that. I just stuck with the Vegan Garden Scramble, which was delicious and provided me with a great start to my day.

Afternoon

We spent the afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Arts, an incredible museum with more than 100 art galleries with American and international artists whose works span from ancient times to the present day. The museum occupied us for several hours, since there was so much awe-inspiring artwork to see.

Evening

For dinner, we went to Leila, a chic Lebanese restaurant with large windows and an excellent cocktail bar. To keep things on the more affordable side, we made a dinner of appetizers. And our dinner was absolutely exquisite. I particularly recommend the hummus and baba ganoush.

Day 2:

Morning

We ate breakfast and got our morning caffeine at Avalon Cafe and Bakery. The cafe has great vegan and vegetarian options, and nice windows which give it a cozy atmosphere.

Eating at Avalon was perfect, because it wasn’t too far from our next stop…

Afternoon

From Avalon, we walked down to the Detroit Riverwalk, a long stretch of pathway along the Detroit River. It was great to spend some time outside and enjoy the views. I thought it was really cool that you can see Canada just across the water!

Later, we enjoyed some drinks and tacos at Bakersfield, a steam-punk-style bar and Mexican-inspired restaurant. Bakersfield has a lively atmosphere, so it was a great place to spend the late afternoon.

Evening

Since I had to fly out early the next day, we called it an early night. When we were ready for dinner, we picked up takeout from Dynasty Chinese Food, which offers delicious and filling food on a budget.

Detroit has lots of fun things to do and great restaurants and cafes. My itinerary includes just a few of these. I hope you will find this itinerary helpful as you plan your own trip!
