Resources for Teaching About Professions: English for Primary School
Learning the English names for professions and occupations is important for young English language learners. The resources below focus on teaching students English names for common professions (i.e. doctor, teacher, chef, farmer, waiter, etc.).
Since my job as an auxiliar de conversación (language assistant teacher in Spain) was to encourage students to speak English in class, my activities center around talking. I planned the below activities for use with second graders, but I think they could be used for first and third grades, as well. I used this presentation to teach about English jobs (aka occupations or professions) during a bilingual social sciences class.
Also, please keep in mind that I put together this English lesson plan on professions and occupations to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL) at a bilingual primary school in Spain. That said, these resources would likely also be useful for teaching English as a second language (ESL) or teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL).
The lesson plan includes English games and speaking activities, as well as an English song with visual elements to mix things up and get students excited about learning English. I hope you and your students enjoy this lesson plan on job-related English vocabulary!

English Games and Activities:
What Do Your Parents Do? - Ask each student what job their parents have. Tell them to use the following sentence as an example: “My mom/dad is a _____.” If they don’t know the word for their parent’s job in English, let them use Spanish and translate for them. Then, ask them to say it as a sentence in English.
Hangman - Play hangman using the English vocabulary words from your lesson on professions.
