Resources for Teaching the Five Senses in English

Below, I’ve compiled some resources I have used to teach the five senses in English to primary school students in Spain. Specifically, I taught first, second, and third grade students in an elementary school. If you’re looking for English as a second language (ESL or ESOL) songs, games, other interactive activities and lesson plans focused on the five senses, this is the page for you!

For first and second grades, I taught the names of the five senses and used games and activities to help the students practice saying these words aloud. For third grade, I created a more complex lesson plan to teach the internal parts of each sensing organ (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin). I think the third grade lesson plan would work well for older students, too.

I hope you find these resources useful for teaching about sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing in English!

English Games & Activities:

What Sense Is Being Used? - a fun picture-based guessing game, best for grades 1, 2, and 3

BONUS ACTIVITY: Ask students to use complete sentences to state which sense is being used (i.e. He/She/They is/are using sight).

Hangman - play hangman with English vocabulary words

English Songs:

The 5 Senses Song - a great song with helpful graphics to reinforce the five senses in English

Complete English Lesson Plan:

The Senses - Third Grade

Use this lesson plan to teach about the five senses in English. This powerpoint presentation includes anatomical diagrams of the eye, ear, nose, and tongue. These graphics will allow you to teach your students how sense information is transmitted from these organs to the brain.
